The narrative unmasks tyranny disguised as kindness, focusing on the unequal power dynamic between the president of the neighborhood association and Yumiko, a woman incapable of saying "no." The president, with his perpetual smile and smooth talk, exploits the goodwill of others; Yumiko, ever accommodating, falls into his trap by agreeing to accompany him on a trip to inspect a hot spring resort. What should have been a simple errand becomes the setting for a calculated conquest.
The *ryokan* serves as the perfect stage for the ambush. The cozy room, the relaxing hot springs, the exquisite dinner, and the generous servings of sake—every detail is designed to lull Yumiko’s defenses to sleep. The president, with meticulous attentiveness, dissolves her tension and distrust until, her guard finally down, she falls into a deep slumber. Upon waking, she is struck by a shock: the president is on top of her, forcing his way inside her. Her initial confusion instantly gives way to a state of captivity; her body betrays her before her mind even registers what is happening.
The story centers on the inescapable cycle that follows. Three months pass, and the association’s annual trip summons her once again. Yumiko’s indignation is palpable, yet it is an impotent rage, for both her body and her heart have already been tamed. The narrative explores the surrender of a woman who, caught between social propriety and physical desire, discovers that the line between rape and pleasure is as blurred as the one separating indignation from submission. Each year brings the same ritual, the same trap—and Yumiko, knowing full well what is to come, can no longer pretend that she does not desire it.
