The narrative delves into the quiet tension of an impossible love—a love fueled by proximity and intensified by the smallest, everyday gestures. Saiki Sunao, a somber-faced *ronin* (a man living alone), begins his new life in an unremarkable apartment, resigned to the solitude of his studies—until a chance encounter pulls him from his lethargy. His neighbor’s wife, Shinonome Ayano, comes as a revelation; her beauty ignites something within him, and suddenly, his gray world bursts into color. Her introduction—"I’m your neighbor from next door"—is a pronouncement disguised as a mere courtesy.
Fate, in its capricious way, brings them together beyond the confines of their apartment building. Saiki ends up working the same part-time job as Ayano, and her kindness—both at work and at home—envelops him in a warmth that draws him, little by little, into love. Yet, there remains an insurmountable obstacle: she is married. Saiki struggles against his own feelings, but his desire proves stronger than his willpower. Unbeknownst to him, Ayano also watches him, seeing an echo of her first love—and beginning to perceive him not merely as a boy, but as a man.
The story centers on this dual perspective: the tension between two people who know they are beyond each other’s reach, yet who—separated by nothing more than a wall—share a longing that grows with each passing day. The memory of a first love and the warmth of a married woman become two forces pulling Saiki and Ayano toward one another. A dangerous love—forbidden by a legal document, yet sanctioned by the heart—begins to bloom in the spaces between their daily routines, in their furtive glances, and in the silences that speak volumes. The narrative is the chronicle of a desire that cannot be, yet persists nonetheless, threatening to shatter the fragile balance of their lives.
